Bikes, Beer & Banter from The Old Sun

Bikes, Beer & Banter is what what Ampthill Cyclists is all about. Now in our 18th year, we are an informal club who ride purely for the craic. Ages (17-60+), fitness & commitment vary, but we share one thing in common- we love cycling (as well as the odd beer & a bit of banter) . We meet at The Old Sun, Ampthill on Thursday evenings from spring to late summer. Setting off at around 6.15, we ride between 20- 30 miles, stopping for a beer or two on the way back to the Old Sun for a couple more.

We're pretty much an autonomous collective- though we do have an elected (press ganged?) chairman.

New members are always welcome.

If you are looking for time trials and training we are not for you but if you enjoy Bikes, Beer & Banter come along on Thursday.

Tour of Duty

Tom Park, son of CP & youngest club member, recently began his first tour of duty as a Royal Marine in Afghanistan. Tom is pictured above with his dad, Joe, Clive & Brian having been presented with a club shirt as a going away present. Potential members should not be put off by the thought that Tom sets the standard for fitness within the club, although a few (Blunty, Everton & Mark) could give him a run for his money. We all wish Tom well and look forward to riding with him again in the near future. (Is it me or is CP shrinking?)

The Call of the Mountains

Ampthill Cyclists also includes a group of Mountain Bikers. Meeting in Market Square, Ampthill at 9.30 on Sunday mornings and usually numbering 3-5, we ride between 15 & 25 miles off-road. Unlike the main group, we ride throughout the year, in pretty much all weather.
Though not noted for its' mountains, the countryside of Bedfordshire offers some pretty good off road-riding for those who prefer fat tyres. There's some great techincal single-track and, even after 17 years of riding, we are still discovering new trails.
We even manage the odd excursion to more exotic venues (well the Chilterns) from time-to-time.
